Three-time NBA champion Danny Green is “nearing an agreement” with the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to agent/attorney Raymond Brothers of Roc Nation Sports. ESPN’S Adrian Wojnarowski was first on the report.
Green, 35, agreed to a buyout after being traded to the Houston Rockets on Sunday. Green never played for the tanking Rockets.
The deal is not yet finalized. Both sides are still agreeing to the terms of the deal according to Woj. Green even said so himself on Twitter.
It feels like a long time ago when Green was traded from the Philadelphia 76ers to his former team, the Memphis Grizzlies on draft night.
The first half of this season was a wash with Memphis. He missed the first 50 games of the season after tearing his ACL and MCL in the 2022 playoffs.
Coming off a major injury, Green will have to prove himself to get any real playing time with the surging Cavs. Undoubtedly, Cleveland will be getting a veteran forward with real playoff history at the biggest stages of his career.
Green won his three NBA championships with three separate teams. First, he won it with Kawhi’s Spurs in 2013-14. His next two were back-to-back, again with Kawhi in 2018-19 in Toronto. Green made arguably his biggest impact on any of these championships with Toronto. Finally, Green won a ring in the bubble with LeBron’s Lakers in 2019-20.
Cleveland will likely get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2018, with or without Green. The Cavaliers are enjoying success as the 4th seed in the Eastern Conference. Donovan Mitchell headlined off-season splashes that helped Cleveland become relevant again.
Donovan Mitchell is certainly a player that can swing a franchise back in the right direction. Cleveland could very easily host a playoff series when the NBA regular season is done.
We’ll have to see if this deal gets finalized. If it does, Danny Green will serve as a veteran presence for a young team with big aspirations.
